THE GENESIS

Now down on it, THE GENESIS Section, the section is dedicated to disseminating information on the origin of AIDS and how it was first transferred. On this section you will find a calendar of events  that highlights important events in the history of AIDS from 1970 to the current day. Knowing the origin of AIDS will of course play a very important role in mapping out a cure for the disease.

 THE GENESIS

Generally, it is now accepted that HIV originated from simian (monkey) immunodeficiency viruses (SIV). Some simian immunodeficiency viruses are similar to the HIV-1 and HIV-2 in certain ways, for example HIV-2 is similar to a simian immunodeficiency virus found in the sooty mangabey monkey (SIVsm) generally known as the green monkey, which is indigenous to western Africa. Similarly the HIV-1 was found to bear some little resemblance in features with the simian immunodeficiency viruses( found in chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes ) know as SIVcpz, which affect chimpanzees.  more explanations of the experiment that led to the conclusion of the resemblance of HIV - 1 with SIVcpz and the origin of HIV was found in 1999 when the Alabama research took place . The research was conducted with plasma from a chimpanzee.

 FIRST CASES OF AIDS

The first cases of AIDS occurred in the USA in june,1981, when five people died from the diseases, but little information was provided about the source of the outbreak. However earlier transmissions of HIV was traceable to  the early mystery of  'Patient Zero'. Patient Zero was a Canadian flight attendant by name Gaetan Dugas who traveled worldwide. Analysis showed that  several of the early victims of AIDS were either direct or indirect sexual contacts of the flight attendant. These cases could be traced to several different American cities demonstrating the role of international travel in spreading the virus. It also suggested that the disease was probably the consequence of a single transmissible agent.

 FIRST CASES OF HIV

Our team was puzzled when we found out that HIV had actually existed since the 1950s. The earliest know occurrences of HIV are:
  • A plasma sample taken in 1959 from an adult male living in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo [which was later used for an experiment in 1998].
  • HIV found in tissue samples from an American teenager who died in St. Louis in 1969.
  • HIV found in tissue samples from a Norwegian sailor who died around 1976

The outcome of the experiment in 1998(using the plasma gotten in 1959) revealed that there are tendencies that HIV had been in humans for over 100 years now!
