In the Netherlands there are different sportclubs which have special G teams.
This means that the team is joining an ordinary sportclub, but the members of
the G team are all mentally or physically disabled.
Most of the time they play in a seperate competition.
And their opponents are also mentally or physical disabled.
Sometimes a person who is mentally disabled can join a team with members who
are not disabled.
These are the sports that people who are mentally disbled can do in the Netherlands
and many other countries:
Archery
At archery it does not matter whether you are sitting or standing. An archer
must only use his arms and hands. When you want to become a champion, you have
to practise a lot.
You can join a local sport club where you can borrow the bows and arrows.
Later on you can buy your own equipment.

Athletics
Wheelchair athletics can use a hand bike or wheelchair.
They can join races with these instruments.
Or they can do discus-throwing.
Blind persons or visual handicapped persons can join contests with a 'guide-runner
' (an accompanying runner) and nevertheless find their way on the track.

Badminton
This is a sport played with light rackets and shuttles.
They can do this standing, sitting on the floor, or sitting in a wheelchair.
It is no problem to lower the net.
They need a shorter racket, but otherwise the rules and technique are the same.

Boccia
This sport is pronounced as: 'botsja'.
This Paralympics sport resemblances 'jeu de boules'.
Only the rules are a bit different.
Even serious disabled people can join this sport.
You can throw the ball with your hands, feet, or a special device.

CP-soccer
Football for people with a spasticity, developed for people with a brain damage
(Cerebral Palsy). Use of crutches or wheelchairs has been prohibited. The rules
deviate something from ordinary football. The teams play, for example on a smaller
field and with a smaller team (six men).

Cycling
When you have only one leg your bike is specially adapted.
When you are blind you can ride on a tandem with a seeing partner.
When you are spastic you can join on a bike with 3 wheels.

Fitness
Do you use your muscles unilaterally because of your handicap?
Or do you do want feel somewhat more fit?
Then fitness perhaps is something for you.
Nebasnsg has established a list of fitness centre where disabled people get
extra attention and accompaniment. Frequently a sport test is frequently necessary
because some insurances compensates for this sport.

Goalball
Even if you see no ball, you can participate simply in the game: goalball !
At this ball sport it is the intention that you hear the special ball which
has a little bell in it.
This is a nice sport for blind or visual handicapped persons, but also people
who can see can join this sport. Each player carries a taped up ski optical
device.

Handball
In Almere there is a special G-team at the handball club: Havas.
They play in a competition against other G teams in the Netherlands.
Two years ago they won the Special Olympics with their team.

Hockey
E-hockey is playing hockey sitting in an electric wheelchair.
There are special sticks that can be fixed to the wheelchair.
So people who cannot use their arms very well can play it too.
H-hockey is playing hockey sitting in a normal wheelchair.

Many people who are menatlly disabled love to ride on a horse.

Ice
and wintersports
People who like to move around the ice sports can choose between icesleighing
or ice sleigh hockey.
These are both Paralympics sports.
You use two ice pickers to move over the ice.
The other side of this stick is used as a hockeystick.
Even blind people or people who are visually disabled can go ice skating.

There are several other sports that diabled people can join.
Like skying, scating etc.
There is a special Paralympics Winter game for people who are really good at
their sports.

Ice

Boys as well as girls can join the team.

- duo dancing: two people in a wheelchair dancing together.
- combined dancing: one person in a wheelchair, one standing.

Weightlifting
Not only for tough men, also for tough women.
The only restriction for people to go weight lifting is that they can use their
hands and arms.
Useful if you have to us a wheelchair because your arm muscles become more strongly.
