Residence

Everyone has to live somewhere. Children prefer to stay with their parents. Adults prefer to live in their own house or apartment.

Jochem, Thiandi and Emma

On this photo you can see Thiandi.
She lives at home with her parents, her brother Jochem and her sister Emma.

Living on your own isn’t as normal for mentally handicapped people as it is for non mentally handicapped people. There has to be looked to the things which are the best for these people and what they prefer. But most of the time these two points do not match really well. Sometimes mentally handicapped people want to stay on their own but can’t because of their handicap.
There are four ways of living for mentally handicapped people:
- living with parents,
- living in an accommodation or in a group home in where there is a lot of care by assistants.
- living accompanied but being on your own too.
- living on your own, where sometimes assistants care for you.
