Candle making

At the candle making department Sylvia and Ria told and showed us how to make candles.

Ria
"Melted candle grease is very hot.
So you have to work precisely.
There are different ways to make a candle."

1. Candles in a mould:
You have to put the thread into the candle grease and wait until the grease gets hard.
You can use a special box for it.
You can get the grease from the big kettle.
Candles in a mould are always flat at the top."


 

2. Formed candles:
"Sometimes you make separate candles.
You use candle wax that is not that hot anymore, but you can use it like clay and make forms out of it."




3. Dipping candles:
Sometimes you just make ordinary dipping candles.
You use a machine to make several of them at the same time.
There are 10 threads on the machine.
You have to dip the threads into the hot wax after each other.
After you have dipped the threads several times, the candle is thick enough.
Dipped candles are not flat at the top, but bold."

It is very useful when you work together at the dipping machine.
When you dip a candle, the other person can put the next thread into the right position.





"After the dipping you can dip the candle into a colour.
We can choose from different colours.
There is orange, or yellow, or purple.
You can also use two colours together."



"When the candles are thick enough, they have to dry.
Usually we make two candles together from one thread.
So you can hang the candle to dry on the thread."

"We also make garden candles.
These candles are also dipped, but are a lot bigger than the ordinary candles.
So it takes a long time before they are finished."
