Special
education
There are different schools for special education. Like a ‘ZMLK’ school
for ‘extremely hard learning children’. A lot of mentally handicapped
children, who can not go to an ordinary primary school, attend a ZMLK school.
A ‘Mytylschool’ is a school for children with a physical handicap.
A ‘Tyltylschool’ is a school for children with a multiple handicap.

In Almere, there is no ‘ZMLK’ school. The nearest schools are those
in Huizen, Lelystad or Dronton. Pupils are transported there with a bus. This
is why people are trying to get mentally handicapped children to ordinary schools.
Since a while, there is a school in Almere, the Weerga. This is a school for children
with a mental as well as a physical handicap.
These
children can not keep up with children from ordinary schools. And because of
this school in Almere, they do not have to go all the way to Huizen, Lelystad
or Dronten.
Secondary Education
There are not that many grammar schools in the Netherlands especially for mentally
handicapped children. Children who came from a special primary school can go
to a special secondary school education. Children who functioned on for instance
‘VMBO’ level, can go to ordinary VMBO schools. There are even kids
who go to ‘HAVO’ or ‘VWO’ class. They do need extra
help with it.
