Years ago glaciers came from Canada and carved the earth as they went. They formed lakes and vallies just by pushing through the hard ground. They collected rock, soil, minerals, and other materials and took them to other areas. That is why all sorts of different rocks and minerals are in different places across Wisconsin. All sorts of glaciers went through the area. When you go to a gravel pit and look up, most of the time you will see layers and layers of dirt. Some layers furtile, some layers poor. When you look at a spot like that, you can tell which layer came first and how many glaciers went over the area just by counting the layers of ground.
