Harris' Hawk


Name derivation:

The Harris' hawk's scientific name "Parabueto unicinctus" is derived from the Greek word "Para" meaning close or near, the Latin words"bueto" referring to a kind of hawk, "uni" meaning once, and "cinctus" meaning girdled referring to the white ring at the tip of the tail.

Size:

Average length-18in. Average wingspan-43in. Average weight-1 to 2lb.

Physical features:

A dark black breas, baze, and black layered wing span the Harris' hawk has distinctive white ringed tail fathers. A large set of broad wings and short sharp hooked beak add to the powerful appearence of this majestic hawk.

Habitat:

Living semiharid habbitats such as scruby praries the Harris' hawk can be found from the South central United States to Central South America.

Diet:

The Harris' hawk is one to take rodents, reptilians, rats, and even full grown rabbits. This hawk is known to hunt in groups to increase chances of a meal.
