Name derivation
:

The Ferruginous hawk's scientific name "Bueto regalis" comes from the Latin term "bueto" meaning a type of hawk or falcon, and the word "regalis" meaning royalty referring to the hawks large size.

Size:

Average legnth-24in. Average wingspan-5ft. Average weight-21 to 41lb.

Physical features:

The Ferruginous hawk has a variety of intigrated black and baze feathers stretching from wing to wing and around the head with a white and brown dappled breast. Razor sharp claws and a short dark hooked beak give the bird distinct hawk features.

Habitat:

The Ferruginous hawk can be found in arid and semiarid grass lands stretching from South Western Canada to the South Western United States.

Diet:

Mainly preying on mammals such as hares, ground squirrels, rabbits, and gophers the Ferruginous hawk will hunt from a variety of perches, hovering positions, from the ground, or from a high searching glide. This large bird of prey will occasionally find a meal of amphibian, insect, or smaller bird.
