Stage 3:  The Pupa

SD Butterflies

After about three weeks, the caterpillar is ready to change again!  This time, it will attach itself to the bottom of a leaf using some silk threads.  It is now ready to become a pupa.  Eventually, the skin of the caterpillar becomes a pupal case, which turns from a bright green color to blue.  This skin hardens and stays like that for several weeks.

It doesn't look like it from the outside, but inside major changes are happening!  The caterpillar's body is broken down and changed into the shape of a butterfly!  This change is called metamorphosis.  In some cases, you can see the body and wings of the butterfly inside the pupal case, just as in the picture above!
