Stage 4:  The Butterfly!

SD Butterflies

Suddenly, the butterfly splits open the case and appears!  Its wings are all crumpled and its body is damp, so it has to stretch its wings out.  This will allow them to harden and dry, but it could take up to two hours before the butterfly is actually ready to fly away.

The next thing a butterfly must do is EAT!  They don't eat leaves, though, like the caterpillar.  Their favorite food is nectar.  This sugary food can be found on the juices of fallen apples or other fruit.  It is also made by most flowering plants.  The butterfly has a long feeding tube that it uses to suck up the liquid nectar.  This tube is very long and can reach deep inside a flower to find the nectar.  When a butterfly is not feeding, the tube is rolled up under its head.

Butterflies need warm weather to survive.  If it gets too cold outside, they can't fly.  Some butterflies go to warmer climates and others find winter hiding places where they stay safe and warm.
