Class: Reptiles    Order: Lizards and Snakes     Family: Pit Vipers

bullet

Cottonmouths like to live in water. There they can eat all the things they like: fish, slimy frogs, tasty ducks, and small turtles.

bullet

They can live to be 20 years old.

bullet

They are called cottonmouths because (no, they don’t have cotton in their mouths) their mouths are white, like cotton.

bullet

They can be 4-5 feet long with olive, brown, and black scales.

bullet

Baby cottonmouths have much brighter patterns than their moms and dads. They get darker as they get older.

bullet

Their defense is to show their white mouths so the attacker will be startled, or in our case (unless you aren't human) see them.
