Newsroom - Stalking

'It Has Ruined Me For Life'

Having an encounter with a stalker is not an experience many of us can bear reminiscing. This is even more so if one is stalked at a young age as the emotional scar formed in the tender years can never be healed easily. This particular young lady got in too deep with an online contact but she only knew how bad the situation was until her friend showed her some nude pictures of herself he had received. Apparently, the stalker had managed to hack into and take full control of the webcam connected to the computer inside her room.

This is another example of how computers have increased the potential of criminals as, though the stalker could physically be in another country, his mental presence was standing inside her room the whole time.

Fifty-year-old security guard

A myth associated with cyberstalking is that people who do not even use the Internet are safe. True, the very nature of “cyber” stalking is that the stalking is done via the Net. But, as this particular true incident shows, it could be the case that it is sufficient for the criminal alone to have Internet access.

This incident proves two things; the first being that cybercrimes need not always occur in cyberspace, the second being that the non-physical nature of cybercrime does not mean the damage done is not real. The crime was committed via cyberspace when the man posted such lewd and obviously false messages online, but the damage manifested itself in the severe psychological impact it had on the victim.
