The time has come to make a choice. Do we passively watch these events taking their own course or do we take an active stance now and restore order to our newly created domain? So far only those who have already been hit and major companies who stand to lose millions if they are hit have taken active measures. The vast majority has yet to practise the same level of caution in the cyberrealm as it does in the real world. Leaving the computer on with broadband connection all night is hardly different from leaving your front door wide open all night, but far more people are guilty of the former than the latter.
It is no co-incidence that cybercrime rates have had an exponential increase over the past decade globally while “real world” crime rates have stayed largely constant. As long as our attitudes towards cybercrime remain as they are, the situation will continue to worsen. Who knows what the world will be like five or ten years from now if cybercrime rates continue to increase at this rate?
Everybody knows that prevention is better than cure. But it is always the case that no matter how advanced your levels and methods of protection are, they are not perfect. Cybercrime and its manifestations cannot be kept out so easily. It is therefore equally important to be armed with the necessary tools to cure any damage that may have been done. Criminals at large also need to be dealt with.

Apart from his own mentality and the strength of his motivations, the criminal also needs to see the path of crime ahead of him clear of obstacles. If every single individual were to put up obstacles of their own, no matter how small, the crime path will seem to be far less lucrative in the eyes of even the most desperate criminal. The fight against cybercrime must start with preventing it in the first place.
