Mount Rushmore is named after
Charles E. Rushmore . Charles E. Rushmore is a New York lawyer. He owned
the area for Mount Rushmore .
Doane Robinson had the idea for Mount Rushmore , but instead of the 4 presidents he pictured western figures . The western figures he pictured were General Custer , Buffalo Bill , Lewis and Clark , and legendary Sioux Warriors . He wanted them to be located in the Needles . Burglum wouldn't do it because he demanded that instead of western figures he would do a portrait bust of the first 150 years of America |

There are 4 presidents named George Washington ,Thomas Jefferson , Abraham Lincoln , Theodore Roosevelt. Between 1927 and 1941 Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers sculpted the 60 foot bust of the 4 presidents. George Washington was chosen because he was the father of our country. Gutzon Burglum starting to carve Mount Rushmore when he was 60 years old . Gutzon Burglum said in 1939, '' you may as well drop a letter in the world's postal service without an address or signature , as to send that carved mountain into history without identification .'' Burglum dreamed of putting in a description of the USA 1776 to 1906 (Washington to Roosevelt). It would've been 80 ft. to 20 ft. in the shape of the Louisiana Purchase . It didn't work because it was not large enough to read and the space was for Lincoln . Since this failed he decided to build a Hall of Records . It would hold the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution .Work took place on July 1938 through 1939 .Work stopped when Gutzon Burglum died . It all stopped on Halloween 1941. Burglum's dream was partly fulfilled when they put in a teakwood box that was full of records that was placed in the floor of the hall entry . | |
