Bear Butte is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota not far from Sturgis. It is the most important religious site for the Lakota and Tsistsistas peoples ceremonies .here are some examples: Praying, fasting, and Vision Quests. There is a visitor center and a buffalo herd . It is 1,253feet tall! WOW!!! There is a a Kiowa Indian myth that says : Seven little girls were playing far from home . All of a sudden some bears attacked them . they got onto a rock . That rose into the sky and made them into stars. The bears tried to reach them but they couldn't . Today we call the rock Devil's Tower. What happened to the bears?, you say. They got tired, and one ran to the Black Hills of South Dakota and laid down . Today we call him Bear Butte . Bear Butte is believed to have once been a volcano, but the magma never reached the top. There is a lake next to it called Bear Butte Lake, it is a good place to find shells. In the Indian stories Bear Butte is like Mount Seine in the biblical stories. Like Moses in the Bible went into Mount Seine to get the 10 commandments , Sitting Bull went into Bear Butte to get 4 sacred arrows, and as Noah built an ark an Indian built a giant canoe. Noah's ark landed on Mount Seine. The giant canoe landed on Bear Butte. |
