Breeds
Coffea arabica (Arabica)
70-75% of all marketed coffee comes from these beans. They are the most commonly
used bean for coffee. They grow mostly in tropical regions, but Coffea Arabica
grows only in a height of 600 to 2000 meters above sea level.
Coffea canephora (Robusta)
This type of coffee was discovered in 1860 in central Africa. This coffee grows
quickly and is hardier than Arabica. The trees grow in many elevations, even
under 600 m above sea level. Robusta is of a middle quality, and not as widely
used. Robusta is mainly used for special coffees and espresso. This coffee
is included in blends with Arabica.
Coffea liberica (Liberica)
This coffee type is not very well known. It grows in tropical valleys in western
Africa. However, the taste is below average and it is not much used for drinking
coffee.
