The History of Coffee
Who is not familiar with it, the hot beverage with the exciting flavor and
its stimulating effects? Of course we’re talking about the popular drink
coffee, also known as „brown gold“. First of all, we want to clarify
the origin of the word coffee: why is this common beverage so named? Coffee
comes from Ethiopia. It is assumed the exact origin of the coffee bush is a
province named Kefa (Kaffa), perhaps this explains the name.
The coffee plant demands a temperate climate with temperatures between 15 and
25 °C, and annual amounts of precipitation from approximately 1,000 to
2,000 mm. Therefore the cultivation is limited to tropical and subtropical
areas.
Coffee was much in demand soon after its introduction to Europe. Its demand
and importance exceeded even those of wheat and coal. „Black gold“,
or oil, was the only commodity which was more in demand; however, it was closely
trailed by coffee.
