The wealthier the people were the more layers they wore and gowns they wore and had made for them.

 They wore more gowns than they normally would any other time. Lots and lots of layers. The people who of course had more money wore even more gowns. They did not wear the kind of winter gear that we wear now a days; they wore more and more gowns. They also got pieces added onto the bottom of their gowns so they could have a longer gown to keep their legs warm. They also wore longer stockings to keep their legs warm.
