During that time, Raffles, Tengku Hussein (the Sultan of Johor), and the Temenggong had signed a treaty to allow the British to set up a trading settlement in the southern part of Singapore. In return, the sultan will be given $5000 and the Temenggong would receive $3000 annually. Later on,a huge amount of immigrants from china, malaysia,other neighbouring countries settle down in singapore.
