Women and Children

By Rachel

Before World War II, women didn’t work. They stayed at home and did household chores and took care of their children. When men went to help fight women had to work to help support their families. Jobs only men were allowed to do, women had to do to support their families. These jobs included being bus conductors, train signal operators, and engineers. Seamstresses made parachutes instead of dresses. Some women even carried out operations on enemy lines. Everyone had to carry a gas mask everywhere. Women were put on posters to bribe men to fight. In Germany, women were awarded medals for producing large amounts of kids. In India women were trained for air-raid precautions. After the war, women were more respected.

The war was just as hard on kids as it was on everyone else, maybe even harder. Their dads went to fight, and the kids knew that they may not return. Kids wore “Mickey Mouse” gas masks instead of regular ones to make wearing them more fun. Kids were evacuated from other countries to America. All evacuees wore tags with their destinations written on them. Some German and Japanese kids even fought in the war.
