Snapping Turtle

***Snapping turtles are the largest freshwater turtle. They can be over 2 feet long and weigh over 45 pounds. Snapping turtles are very mean,and have a deadly bite. Adult turtles have a dark brown shell. The underside of the shell is small, allowing their heavy neck, legs, and tail freedom for quick movements.

***Snapping turtles eat fish, insects, frogs, small birds, plants, and crayfish. They move their heads very quickly, and snap their jaws around their prey. When eating they must remain underwater.

***These turtles are swift walkers on land, and can jump completely off the ground. Because they can't go back into its shell, it protects itself by biting and snapping. They are found on the bottom of the pond, or floating with just its nostrils above water.

***During the summer, snapping turtles lay hard shelled eggs that will hatch in about 3 months. When winter comes, snapping turtles hibernate in the mud on the bottom of the pond. These are some important facts about snapping turtles.
