Painted Turtle

***The painted turtle lives among the plants that live on the side of the pond, or they may live on rocks or hollow logs. The turtle's shell may be seven inches long. The color of the reptile can be olive brown, or black with yellow lines. They can have red markings. The females lay 5-12 eggs in June. The eggs hatch in two months. Many of the baby turtles are eaten before they get to the pond waters.

***Painted turtles eat snails, shellfish, insects, and plants. They swallow all of their food underwater. They can't chew so they "bite" with their claws. The turtles hibernate in the mud starting in October.
