Killdeer
***If you see a bird running around
the edge of a pond you are probably looking at a killdeer. The
killdeer will run instead of fly. The little bird is only ten
inches long. Its color is an olive brown that blends into a orange
brown on its bottom. It has a black neckband, two black marks
that look like hands on its chest, and a white belly.
***The kildeer's favorite foods
are crayfish, invertebrates, and small water creatures. The killdeer's
nests are located on the ground near the pond's edge. The young
birds are able to run sooner the other birds' young are able
to fly. Some run around on the day they hatched.
