The Team

Thinkquest team 00206 proudly presents our four team members, primary coach and subcoach:

Name : Zhi Yong (16) - Yr 12 Student, Middlemount Community School.

Role : Team leader, management of work flow, coordination and assembly of website.

Zhi Yong, known as 'Vicky' by all her friends, is one of the two girls who began this website as a challenge against the limitations of living in a rural area. Her home town of Middlemount, a small mining town with a population of 3000 - three hours drive from the nearest city, has a total of 27 grade 12 students enrolled in the local P-12 school. With chinese heritage and a sometimes strong headed passion for doing what seems unachievable, Vicky does three virtual schooling and two distance education subjects, which have taught her self discipline and determination.

Teaming up with Ashlee and being able to find two other team members who shared the same enjoyment for challenging the limits of possibility, has become her sole reason for entering Thinkquest. Despite never having taken IPT, Vicky's interest in computers has brought her quite far. Thinkquest has really made her appreciate what the strengths and persistence of each member can combine to produce.

Name : Ashlee (16) - Yr 12 Student, Middlemount Community School.

Role : Research, planning and full content write up of website in english.

Ashlee has spent 10 years of her life in Middlemount and often gone with the flow in school, never having dreamt it were possible to establish her own website. Teaming up with Vicky, her belief in this possibility began to grow as she worked away on the content write up through the summer holidays. Ashlee comes from a large family of eight and enjoys reading, dancing, horse riding and piano. Her biggest wish is to finally go overseas one day, having never left Australian borders and wants to become a travel journalist.

The biggest difficulty of her role was definitely the lack of resources available in Middlemount, with not one suitable book found in the public library, no forensic science lab (there are two policemen in the whole town) and thus left the internet as the main source of information. Learning to believe in herself has been the greatest achievement from entering Thinkquest and something she will still have with her even after the site's completion.

Name : Xiao Qing (17) - Student, Guangzhou Xiguang Pui Ying Middle School.

Role : Translation of website contents into Chinese.

Qing Qing is a studious chinese girl and one of the only overseas correspondents who did not yield to the pressure of deadlines and distance. She is studying in Guangzhou Xiguang Pui Ying Middle School and has entered Thinkquest as a chance to become more mature and raise her own self discipline. She favours sports such as badminton, body mechanics and swimming, and likes surfing the internet, chatting and playing games in her free time. Through doing this project, Qing has gained precious experience and worked with a wonderful team of students from Australia.

Name : Lea (18) - Undergraduate, Univeristy of Technology, Sydney.

Role : Translation of website contents into german.

Lea is 18 years old, now living in Sydney and studying at UTS. She plays four different musical instruments and is in a band with her brother and sisters. Her favourite sports are horse riding, swimming and tennis and once competed in the Australian Trampoline Championships as a state finalist. She loves movies, acting and dress design. German was her favourite subject at school, and she achieved the top Yr 12 results here. In a group, she also won the State German Competition in 2001 and has done the german version of this site to further her german skills.

As a late team partner, the greatest challenge was the time pressure and getting access to a computer whilst on a worldtrip. Besides the interesting learning curve of the subject matter it was great fun for her to use German again.

Name : Irene Jackson

Role : Assistant Coach - providing support with german translation and valuable general guidance.

Mrs Irene Jackson (Frau Jackson) is currently a maths teacher, who has previously taught german, computer studies and social studies during her teaching career. Originating from South Africa, she is a very dedicated teacher, who never gives up on her students. Mrs Jackson taught in Middlemount over five years ago, but kept in contact with Zhi Yong, on who's request, she immediately agreed to take on the role of study coach. She lives in a small town on the coast of Queensland, about four hours drive from Middlemount.

Through the entire journey, we were most grateful for the support she gave us through email correspondence, particularly to check our german and give suggestions for the site. Despite the lack of contact due to the circumstances, we could always rely on her to be there for us. Danke schön - thankyou.

Name : Mr Donald Thomas - Head of Resource Centre, Middlemount Community School.

Role : Primary Coach, providing the team with invaluable sources of information and guidance.

Don Thomas is a teacher with almost thirty years experience. He has skills and expertise in the areas of technology and library, having undertaken postgraduate courses in librarianship and computer education. He is always willing to assist students who are self motivated in achieving extra skills and knowledge outside of the expected school curriculum. Don has acquired a wealth of experience that he is able to call upon in all areas of teaching. His interests include sport, photography and interactive games.

The team wish to express their gratitude towards the effort Mr Thomas has made to ensure we could put the site together in time, particularly with regards to finding the necessary resources and believing in us from the moment we first approached him. Thankyou.
