1) I can't view any part of the site as it seems to be taking a long time to load. What should I do?

The likely explanation for this is that you've chosen a version of the site that may be unsuitable for your connection speed. If your computer connects to the Internet via a modem (this will be obvious if you hear a series of beeps and miscellaneous noises when you dial up), then you're probably best suited to viewing either the low-fi or text only versions of this website. You can select them here.

2) The website is loaded but I can't view the banner, which appears blank. How do see the banner?
This would be a likely problem if you are using the high-fi version of the website but do not have Macromedia Flash Player, or have an older version. (Version 6 or higher is required) You may download Flash Player for free here, or you may simply wish to decide to switch to the low-fi version.

If this does not work, check that your antivirus program has enabled the file to come through. In cases such as using PC-cillin, a message may pop up asking whether you'd like to allow the file to be displayed.

3) I've clicked on the 'other language' version of the website but the words on the site are gibberish. How do I change this so I can view the site in another language?

This shouldn't normally be a problem, however, if it is, then select 'view' from your menu and place your cursor over 'encoding'. A list will appear to the right. If you are in the English or German versions of the website, make sure the encoding is set to 'Western European'. If you are in the Chinese version of the site, ensure the encoding is set to 'Simplified Chinese (GB2312)'. Should neither of these encoding formats appear in the appearing menu, choose 'more' for a much larger list.

4) When I click to view the video, it doesn't play. What should I do?

The video interviews are all in either .asf or .wmv format. If you are working on a Macintosh system, this could raise a problem and you will unfortunately, not be able to view it. Windows Media Player is the default player for both formats and is necessary for their viewing.

5) I cannot find what I am looking for on your website. What should I do?

The best idea is to select the site map from the navigation bar on the right hand side. On the site map, there is not only a thorough listing of all available topics, but also a search facility to help you look for your preferred section.

6) I am simply reading up about forensic science out of interest. Do you have any suggestions for the order of reading when using this site?

The website has been arranged so that a logical viewing order would be from top to bottom. Thus, we would suggest you begin reading with 'scene of crime' and work your way down toward the 'crimes of stealth'. The quizzes and other miscellaneous material found in the interactive section is a means of helping you understand and enjoy the whole experience, so these come toward the base of the navigation bar.

7) What version of website should I view?

I would suggest the following versions for the different internet speeds:
--> High-fi: This is a version of the website which includes a Flash banner (300kb) and an image based navigation bar. The users of this version would preferably have some form of broadband internet connection such as ADSL or ISDN.
--> Lo-fi: (recommended) Anything from a 56kps modem or higher should easily be able to access this site. The loading speed should be quite moderate and this version balances out the quality and speed factor for most home users.
--> Text-only: For users with 28.8kps modems who only want access to text.

8) I try to click on a link, but the computer says 'this page cannot be displayed'. What can I do?

Firstly, click on the refresh button just to make sure it is not a one off problem. Check that your internet connection is still secure and that other web pages are still able to load. If the problem persists, it is likely a technical error on our behalf and it would more than appreciated if you could email us to inform us of the broken link.

9) I can't hear any of the sounds on the website. What should I do?

The low-fi versions and text only versions do not actually have any form of background music or sound effects. If you are on the high fi version, sound effects exist on the flash banner. Place your mouse over one of the site version selections to check that a heartbeat is heard. If it isn't heard, ensure that your volume controls are turned up or that your speakers are on. The volume control on most XP systems will be located in a toolbar at the bottom right of your screen. The icon to look for is a speaker. Right click on it and go to volume properties. You should then check the mute box is not checked and that the volume is on.

10) The website is a little too long for me to read all at once, what can I do to come back to the same spot I left off?
The bookmark function located beneath the banner of each page in the low-fi and high-fi functions will allow you to add that page to your favourites list in Internet Explorer. If a dialogue pops up suggesting that your browser does not support this function, you may have to bookmark the page using the default method of your web browser.

The other choice is to simply go into the site map, where each topic of the different sections has been listed so that you not only have access to a certain page of a certain version, but also to a certain topic heading of each page.

11) Is there any 'copyright' on this website? Who would I contact if I wanted to take a section, for example pictures, information, videos or games, from the website and use it elsewhere?

Feel free to use the information on the site for personal projects (see disclaimer) or research without the need for prior permission, but if you wish to take actual content from the site such as the unaltered information, featured images or other sections of the site, you will need to email us with information about what you'd like to use and what you're using it for. In most cases, if the team holds copyright for the content, it should not be a problem, but many images/videos belong to their respective owners and we do not have permission to distribute them.

12) I can't seem to play the interactive games on the website. What should I do?
If you are having problems with the interactive crossword/quiz/puzzle, check firstly to see that your antivirus program has not blocked the JavaScript associated with these activities. Then, if that is not the problem, choose the 'tools' option on your toolbar and select 'internet options'. Click on the security tab at the top and click on the 'default level' toward the bottom. Refresh your page.

If the find-a-word is causing you problems, the most likely reason is you don't have flash player. You can download Flash player here.

13) I am on the home page of your high-fi site and I can't view the contents section even though I am running my mouse over the different icons. What's wrong?

The contents section of the high-fi homepage is layer-based, a feature which is only recognisable by Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher, or Netscape Navigator 4.0 and higher. You can verify this by choosing 'help' from your toolbar and selecting 'about'. If this is the case, you may wish to try accessing the site through a newer version of web browser or it should not hurt to navigate using the navigation bars at the top and side. The fingerprint types section should be the only other section that won't be viewed properly.

14) I seem to have problems viewing the different icons at the top of your lo-fi pages. What's wrong?

Like above, check that your browser is a version of Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher or Netscape Navigator 4.0 and higher.

15) What is the difference between the 'low-fi' and the 'high-fi' versions of the website?

Each version of the website has been designed to accommodate different connection speeds, but also to offer an alternative layout to stimulate learning. Whilst first designing the layout and colour scheme, a variety of opinions were put forth, including the fact that whether a colour scheme was suitable was really in the eye of the beholder. Despite a small survey we conducted, the preference wasn't significant enough for the group to choose either a dark and graphic or a light and simple colour scheme. So multiple versions were created, to accommodate not only for the different connection speeds, but also for the different preferences of colour and learning environment. The content throughout all the versions of the site are exactly the same.
