Can you imagine not being able to speak? How hard would it be to do ever day things we take for gratin like how about ordering a pizza? Well mute people have to live with this and with limited solutions it can be a little harder to communicate.

Sign language is most likely the more popular method to allow mute people to "speak" using their hands instead of their mouths. The alphabet in sign language is very simple containing 26 hand sign 1 per letter. Although the signs will never replace speaking it does allow the mute to "sign" there way into our world.

The main roots of sign language came from 18th century France. The Abbe De l'Epee were the first, they developed Methodical signs, the Abbe Roch-Ambroise Sicard continued it on, but this brought upon some big changes.

Both Laurent Clerc and Ferdinand Berthier wrote about these methodical signs and about them being useless. Laurent Clerc was one of the first people to bring deaf education to America. Unfortunately for deaf people they are also normally mute to because they can't learn to speak properly.

Lately there have been new ways popping up al lover the place like the VOCA (voice output communication aid). This device produces printed or spoken text. This allows a mute person the ability to communicate orally.

Although VOCA can be a device in itself mute people can also get software for a laptop computer that allows them things like schedules and reminders. Some software even comes with symbols instead of letters for the mute people who can't read. Though there aren't many ways that mute people can regain their voices, their should be more coming sometime in the future.
