Braille is used to let blind people read. It is the most effective way to write or read somthing without actually seeing it. Braille is a series of rased dots and spaces that represent letters and sounds. Braille is not a separate language, it just represents the sounds or numbers different symbols for letters and other sybols. There have been some technology increases that allow braille to be used more efficiently by the blind. Some of which are listed below. There are also some old methods that are still fairly effective. The Stylus and SlateThe stylus is a small piece of metal or plastic, similar to a pencil or pen in shape. The slate is a piece of metal or plastic with a hinge in the middle. It clamps on the piece of paper and allows you to write accurately and easily and is very inexpensive. The slate is covered on one side with rows of holes which are used to write braille. The idea behind the stylus and slate is that once you clamp the slate onto the paper you use the stylus to emboss or embed the letters onto the piece of paper. You do this with the stylus. These slates and styluses come in many shapes and sizes. |

Braille Displays Braille displays are sets of computer controlled rods continually move up and down to simulate braille characters. The braille is computer controlled and is used to read text displayed on the computer. This is an incredibly useful invention and enables the blind to use computers. Also deaf people can read books in their computers. These characters are continually refreshing and keep changing as you move the mouse. Electronic braille Note takersThese devices are used by blind people to store information. They can return the information either with braille text or it can read out loud with a computer voice. They are useful in almost any occupation and save must time and effort by the user. Braille PrintersBraille printers are similar to normal printers but instead of printing out normal text they use heavyweight paper and emboss the braille letters onto the paper. There are also braille typewriters which have six keys, one for each of the dots on a braille letter. These also have keys for space, period and backspace. These once again use heavyset paper for writing. Brail isn’t the only way that blind people are being helped, these are just a few examples of how things are becoming accessible for people with no vision The blind caneThrough new technology scientists have created a invisible cane. It sends out lasers and they return to the device and return information as to stairs and steps. It also returns information on drops which helps the blind find their way around with greater ease. It is the size of a flashlight which is small and easy to use. The talking calculatorThat’s right it is what it says. It is a calculator that says what is on its screen. You can enter numbers normally and perform normal calculations but as well as displaying it on a screen it speaks out the numbers in a synthesized voice. This would be invaluable to an impaired person as they couldn’t normally use a calculator. |
