Imagine, switching places with a young teenager from the 1930's. Would you be wearing what you were in the 21st century? You probably would not be wearing the clothes you were wearing today, and if you decided to, you might be laughed at. Why are fashion trends different from back then? Why are you wearing different clothing styles then the people of 1930? Back in the "yesteryears", clothing was different then it is now. In this article, learn a bit about clothing styles from past decades, in a blast from the past...
![]() | Back in the 30's, popular clothing had a whole different definition. Like the women of today, the ladies of the 30's sought what all females seek. They wanted to be thin. Some clothing styles were created to make girls look "magically" thinner, by using sewing techniques to gather materials in a design, to make the waist and other body parts slimmer. Swimwear and evening gowns were also altered to give the person a flattering look, by making the back part of the clothing piece backless. This backless clothing style allowed exposure to the back and its smooth skin. Evening gowns were often long and flowing, cut on the bias. |
As we move on to yet another decade, fashion styles altered again. In 1940 World War II began, affecting the amount of money men and women could spend on their clothing, greatly influencing the fashion trends. Military styles and uniforms were seen everywhere because of WWII, and some women wore clothing that had a uniform look and padded shoulders, while others wore short skirts. These short skirts have lasted to our present day lives, and these miniature skirts can be seen often. In the late 1940's, Dior introduced a now look that coincidentally was called the "New Look." The new look consisted of a natural waistline top that was paired with a long full skirt. This "New Look" was popular amoung many people, and was worn often. | ![]() |

Next up is the rocking 50's. You may remember the line, "Thank you, thank you very much." In case you don't recognize it, this was one of Elvis' trademark sayings. Elvis was a great influence on fashion. Leather jackets, pompadour hairstyles, white tee-shirts and dungarees were a few of the articles fashion that were introduced in the 50's. The 50's also brought the poodle skirt into fashion. The poodle skirt often was white or pink, consisting of a cute poodle on the front side of the skirt. Poodles, were not just for pets, anymore! |

Next up is the groovy 60's, the era of the hippies. That is what we will be focusing on for this portion, the look of a hippie. Hippies were usually seen wearing bright vibrant clothing. It was in fact the hippies who created tie-dye clothing. The saying "Peace, Dude" was said almost by everybody, with the international peace sign. Long earings, large rings, and circular glasses were often worn. Groovy baby! | ![]() |

Next up on our ride through fashion's history is the psychedelic 70's, the era of disco. The main change in fashion that occurred in the 70's was the pants. The pants were no longer baggy like they were in the 60's but they were now regular fitting jeans with cuffs that flared out. Women of the 70's wore "hot pants," a collaboration of mini skirts and pantsuits. When the movie Grease, starring John Travolta came out, the look of the 50's came back into style. "Grease Lightning" drove everyone dancing, smiling. |
As the clothing styles changed over the decades, the men and women also changed. However, these blasts from the past ocassionally occur in the 21st century, and often in men and women's clothing, we are remembered about the poodle skirts, the tie-dyed t-shirts, and the flared fitting jeans from the past. Many people everywhere around the world still wear these "groovy" articles of clothing, and retro clothing from antique shops is popular. Retro or antique clothing is worn everyday, by people all around the world. Always enjoy a bit of the past, in the present.
