How do businesses come up with their names?  It’s obvious from the names of the businesses below that some look at Roman and Greek Mythology!

 

 

 

Saturn cars

In Roman mythology Saturn was the youngest of the first generation of titans.   He was the Roman God of Agriculture.  Cronus would be his Greek counterpart.  Saturn is also the root for the English word “Saturday.” “Saturn’s Day.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     

 

 

Mercury cars

In Roman mythology Mercury is the God of commerce, travel and thievery! Interesting!  He has his own planet, metal industry and car businesses. 

 

Nike

Nike (Ni-Key) is the Greek Goddess of victory.  The Nike symbol is supposed to be one of her wings. www.nike.com

 

 

 

Janus Insurance

Janus   is the God of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings, and   endings.  Janus is also the origin of the English word “January” and is also the name of the 6th known satellite of Saturn.

 

 


Midas mufflers

 King Midas was granted the ability to change any and everything to gold with a simple touch of his finger.  The Greek God Dionysius gave him this gift.  After a while however, Midas was unable to eat or drink, because everything he touched turned to gold!  Midas prayed to the Gods for relief.  Hearing his pleas the God’s granted his request and urged him to bathe in the Pactolus River in Lydia.  When he did this he was relieved of his power, however after that the Pactolus always – and still does – have gold dust in it according to Greek mythology.
