All plants must have roots to live.
There are fat roots like trees and
skiny roots like dandelions. Most
roots grow underground. They grow
underground to take in water and
minerals from the soil.
All roots have root hairs. Root hairs
are very tiny hairs on roots that are
tube shaped cells.
There are two kinds of roots. One
kind is called a tap-root. A tap-root is
a large root that grows deep
underground with smaller roots
growing out of it. An example of a tap-
root is a carrot.
Another kind of root is called a
fibrous root. A fibrous root is a
system of many equal sized roots. An
example of a fibrous root is grass.
Roots also hold the plant in place and
store food made by leaves.
