Remember, back in the 2004 summer Olympic games, when Michael Phelps won 7 gold medals? Well, why was he so fast? The swimming uniform definitely had a lot to do with it. The swimming uniform has changed a lot over the years-for the better.
Back in the 1920 Olympic Games the women wore long, white, flannel
skirts. They wore this because the style of clothing was skirts down to the
ankles. Divers were given an official uniform. They were made out of cotton.
The swimming uniform today is pretty standard. Swimmers will wear a swim cap, to hold back all of their hair, so it won’t slow down the swimmer. A swimmer will also wear goggles, to protect their eyes from water. Swimmers now also wear a new “fat skin” suit. It is made to be very tight on the swimmer, so there is less friction in the water. As you can see, the swimming uniform has undergone many changes. The uniform is much tighter, so the swimmer can move a lot faster in the water.
The next time you go swimming, what would you rather wear? The uniform of the past, or the uniform of the present?
