Much of the controversy surrounding stem cells is on the basis of ethics. Many detractors of abortion also disagree with embryonic stem cell research, if not stem cell research in general, due to the necessary destruction of a blastocyst once stem cells are harvested from it. More extreme critics, like Leon Kass, fear the changes that such advanced medical technologies will bring to society. Some religious disparagers believe that using stem cells is interfering with a Higher Power's plans. Of course there are many people on the other side of the debate who feel that it is unethical to not participate in stem cell research. The team that developed this website is of this persuasion. We feel that the possible benefits of stem cell research far outweigh any societal harm that is likely to affect us soon anyway. |
