Pioneers

Dear diary.

another day, another adventure. Today was so cool!  Mrs. PinPold took us on a wild field trip! I was right in the middle of another boring math test when she snatched the paper out of my hand and threw it in a garbage. "Enough of that boring stuff!," she screeched. A flash of light gushed through the room- and we were gone to the past.

As the flash disappeared in the sky we found ourselves standing in the center of an old western town. Right in front of us was a sheriff's office and next to it what appeared to be a stinky, slimy  jail. The undertaker's office was right next door. Wonder why?

As I slowly turned around I noticed people hurrying in and out of the general store, their hands full of boxes and sacks. The sounds of piano and loud laughter spread from the saloon. Beside it a housekeeper hung a freshly washed sheets in front of the grand hotel. Looking in the other direction I noticed a bank and a white stone church.

Shhhhhh, went the wind as the tumbleweed drifted around the dirt road. The sky was blue and soft sun made the whole town seem like a peaceful postcard."Booom", a gun shot sounded. Screeching of horses mixed up with the shouting of scared women! I've got to get out of here.

Jumping on the back of my horse I galloped out of town. As the buildings behind me vanished in the dust, I noticed log cabins in the middle of farms. Occasionally I saw children playing and women doing laundry. I approached to ask for some food and they led me to their small house. What a friendly place! The candles made by hand and a handmade soap sounded great, as I felt the exhaustion coming on!

They lent me a bed. As I slowly drifted to sleep I remembered Mrs. PinPold's math test! Oh, whatever!!!!

What can make a person pick up all they ever had and head across the ocean to the place he knows nothing about! LAND! You see, in Europe the land was already divided. Those who did not get a share did not stand the chance. So they set sail to the new world where land was cheap and waiting to be claimed. After all no one owned it, right? They brought their families and built log cabins. They fought the Native people and burried their children along the way. They settled in their dream farms, taken from the tribes who slowly vanished. Just who owns this land?
