WILD WEST IN ART
WESTERN MOVIES
Westerns were set in the American west in 19th century of before. They show gunslingers, pioneers and Native Americans and their adventures in the west. The idea of western movies came from Wild West Shows like the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Some smart people figured out people liked such shows and started making movies about this historical time. The problem with these movies is that they often do not tell anything close to the truth. Violence seems to be important, respected, and acceptable. Gunslingers and cowboys are usually heroes, regardless how many people they killed. Native Americans are shown in very bad light most of the time. While some western movies are very artful and good, many are just plain violent. They also give people of wrong impression of how Native Americans and settlers lived during this time period.
Everyone has seen a western movie. Even if you enjoy it, make sure that you know that most of them are just make -believe stories made for entertainment and not a historical fact.
