Book 18
Synopsis:
Odysseus meets the town tramp, Arnaeus (Irus), who later ends up fighting with him, due to a quarrel. He wins the fight, and is awarded a goat sausage, plus respect from the suitors. Athena inspires Penelope to present herself to the suitors, and make highly of her son and husband. This she did, looking more beautiful than ever with Athena's help. She tells the suitors of Odysseus's last words, before he left for the war. Penelope also tricks the suitors into giving her each one gift. Melantho, Eurymachus's lover and a serving woman, taunted Odysseus, who later receives threats from him. Eurymachus was next in throwing out insults. Odysseus and Telemachus then fought back. Amphinomus, another suitor, sent everyone back home for that night, after everyone gave libations to the gods.
