The New Orleans cemeteries have been known as "Cities of the Dead" for many years. This is because the caskets are in small house-like tombs. Each wealthy family has their own tomb. So if somone in your family died, their casket would go in your family's tomb.

The caskets are in these tombs because they cannot be underground. (Look at History page for more details.)
