The Development and Change of Cantonese Opera

At the beginning of 1940, two ingenious artists Xue Jiaoxian ( 薛覺先 ) and Ma Shizeng ( 馬師曾 ) devoted themselves to the reform of Cantonese Opera, particularly the theme, stage art, costumes and make-up. In addition, Ma Shizeng founded the western music section and introduced cello, saxophone, violin and other musical instruments to Cantonese Opera .

Early in the Cantonese Opera, there were no female artists. All characters were performed by the male actors. Later, female artists were permitted to take part.

Since the middle of the 1980's, many people have enjoyed Cantonese Opera and have sung opera songs as a leisure pursuit.
