Hephaestus was God of the blacksmith fire. Craftsmen
worshipped him. He was also the great powerful God of Volcanoes. This
was because the fire within the great volcanoes was thought to be his
craftsman's furnace. The great Mt. Etna, on the small island of Sicily,
is related to this God.
Ending up being the God of Volcanoes is pretty amazing because Hephaestus
was supposed to have been born lame and crippled and his mother threw
him down from Mt Olympus where he fell for an entire day! He finally
landed in the ocean and was rescued by nymphs. Later, he built his home
under a volcano. |
