Pharmacogenomics

This is a new branch of pharmaceutics which aims to tailor medicines to an individual’s genetic makeup. The driving principal of this area is that these type of drugs are more effective than conventional medicines.

When asked how close we are to accomplishing this goal, Dr. Ranade replied: “we are getting there, but it is early days .” He cited the fact that his laboratory has only been in existence for five years to demonstrate that “we’re just starting.”

However, there have been some rudimentary pharmacogenomics products. Herceptin is a pharmacogenomics drug, a breast cancer drug produced by the biotech company- Genentech. The drug treats only breast cancer patients with a specific genetic characteristic.
