I believe that I might have contracted the HIV virus in the early 1980s when very little was known about the disease. I knew I was in the 'high-risk' category for getting the virus but I did not change my ways. Chances are I was carrying the virus even then. But I did not for a moment think that I will be a victim. I tested positive 7 years ago after a series of illnesses. I knew I was positive even before the test results came through, I also knew it was not an immediate death sentence. The medicines I need to take to keep this illness at bay is affordable and without them I would perhaps be dead by now. They work well and keep me feeling great. I keep a normal job and not many people know that I am HIV positive. I do not advertise about my HIV positive status because there is still a lot of stigma and discrimination surrounding AIDS.
