response

As HIV violently destroys the region, only firm and resolute response mechanisms can be administered to effectively temper its damage:

  1. Continued socio-economic support intra-nationally must be pursued to foster a perpetuated understanding and awareness of what the problem is. The people, first, must be willing to rectify the situation and restore order to their region before the government can involve itself.
  2. Initiation of negotiations with the Indian drug manufacturer, Cipla, should be undergone in regards to large-scale distribution of antiretroviral drugs at a large scale. This method would in effect severely lessen current regional involvement with dominant pharmaceuticals, Roche and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). This would allow for governments to save money and provide for improvements in other aspects of the region's development in addition to bringing in a cheaper store of medicines replete with HIV drugs equivalent to those produced in American pharmaceutical research laboratories.
  3. Dedicated efforts to decrease the number of intravenous drug users in the region. This is the most important reform measure, as this group of the population comprises the majority of HIV/AIDS bearers. Only by limiting the continuance of this practice can change be achieved.
