Window Period

There is a "window period" for HIV antibody testing because it takes time for a person who has been infected to develop HIV antibodies. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says about the window period:

"Antibodies generally appear within three months after infection with HIV, but may take up to six months in some persons."

This definition of the window period is the current norm used by most people.
