One can live in a
house without air-conditioner for a long time, but one cannot work in a
skyscraper without any windows for more than a day. There comes the
importance of this cooling device. The air conditioner is basically a refrigerator without the insulation unit. Air pumped from the room and fresh air intaken from outside is pumped through dust filters, the cooling tower (where the air disputes its heat), cooling tubes, a smell filter, a humidifier and a silencer before it enters the room. {image} The usual type of air conditioner skyscrapers use is the chilled-water system. Water passes through the expansion valve, then it is compressed before it is pumped through the heat exchanger, where the evaporation of Freon chills the water to a temperature between 4.4 and 7.2 C. Finally the chilled water is pumped throughout the building to cooling tubes as needed. The cycle repeats. As long as the chilled-water pipe is well-insulated, the temperature of the water would stay approximately the same. |
