What About Talk Shows??
What is a talk show? Why waste time watching talk shows? According to Word Net, a talk show is "a program during which well-known people discuss a topic or answer questions telephoned in by the audience." Ellen, Dr. Phil, and Oprah are all examples of shows where people just share their thoughts and entertain an audience.
Some of the more outrageous talk shows involve audience participation, like The Jerry Springer Show, but the audience participates in a negative way, yelling and screaming insults or antagonizing a guest of the show. Ironically, Jerry himself calls his show silly, and even put in a try for the Senate in 2003!
Most talk shows are not based on "silliness" but on real, valid issues that face most people today. The most recent evidence was the 2004 season opener for the Oprah Winfrey Show. Being a person known to donate to many causes, she gave each and every audience member a brand new car, a Pontiac G6. The audience was made up of people who were in need of a new car, so Oprah had a parking lot filled with over 250 cars, each with a red ribbon.
So, why waste time watching talk shows?? Maybe the lesson learned from Oprah, that giving makes people feel good, can spread from one person to the next and start a domino effect, where everyone benefits.
