Why Waste Your Time on TV News?

When Egbert Roscoe Murrow entered the field of journalism back in the 1920s, he probably had no idea that his lead would create so many followers. He was hired by CBS radio in 1927, but after World War II ended, he joined the world of television. It was his style of going after a story, of being the investigative reporter that set the stage for many famous news broadcasters. Most people in the television news industry will say, when asked, that Edward R. Murrow was their hero, that he paved the way for the strong journalism that exists today.

Reporting the news was not a new concept, it was not a new idea by any means, but television brought images of the story into peoples’ homes. For the first time, people could see what was happening in Europe or America and understand what was going on.Big events like World War II and the taking down of the Berlin wall all captured the attention of millions of TV views, all over the world. Broadcasters like Walter Cronkite, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, and Huntley and Brinkley became famous anchormen on different networks, reporting from different locations, making news fast paced and cutting edge.

Today, TV news broadcasting is bigger than ever. Some channels present news 24 hours a day, seven days a week. CNN, one of those cable channels, had been on the air, but when the first Gulf War broke out in 1991, round the clock news reporting became part of the public culture, soon to be followed by MSNBC, Fox news, and CNBC, to name the more popular ones. Another type of news broadcasting is in the form of governmental reporting on the different C-SPAN channels.

Of course, there are also news programs that are meant to entertain as well as inform, such as NBC's TODAY show and ABC's Good Morning America. These shows feature news, weather, plus longer segments that will inform viewers on the latest topics in health, fashion, social issues, music, movies, and so much more. Some other popular shows are the news magazines such as Dateline, PrimeTime and 20/20.

So why watch the news? Watching the news is a quick, informative, visually interesting way to learn about the world around us, every morning, night, and all hours in between
