Why Waste Time Watching TV?
Have you ever wondered what you are really wasting your time on? Yeah, it's television, but what really is it? Read on to find out your answer!
The word television means, "vision at a distance". The industry of manufacturing televisions, selling televisions, and repairing televisions has a major impact on the economy. There are several kinds of TV sets: CRTs, Plasma, Liquid Crystal, Rear Projection, and Large Screen Projection. Most people own the CRT, or cathode ray tube type. Plasma TVs use technology similar to flourescent light to make atoms light up (photon energy). Rear Projection uses a mirror in the back of the screen to reflect light, where a Large Front Projection screen does the same thing with a projector in front. Liquid Crystal technology is very complicated but uses a liquid/solid combination to filter light that gets projected onto the screen.
Broadcast television is transmitting signals by radio waves, cable, or both radio waves and cable. Closed circuit television, in contrast, sends signals to only certain television sets. These sets are connected to cable, over air signals, decoders, and adapters. Surprisingly, an important part of broadcasting is technically a closed circuit system.
Television sets manufactured for home use can receive broadcast signals from various electronic devices. These electronic devices include VCRs, DVD players, satellite dishes, and cable service providers. The signal is decoded by the television from a carrieer frequency which the televsion reproduces as a picture on a screen. There are more parts to a TV signal that carry other information such as the "vestigial and upper sidebands" which are the video picture data. Of course, there is also the sound carrier frequency that brings sounds to the television! In all, television isn't just wasting your time! There is a lot of thought, work, science, and engineering that goes into creating and building TV sets.
