Male and female cicadas, at first, it seems like there's no difference.
But, the truth is that there are a couple differences. One of the most
distinguishing details is only males make the shrill buzzing noise that you
allways hear. It's a mating call. To attract females, they vibrate
two membranes called tymbals to make the buzzing sound. It's hard to
believe that all that annoying sound is just from the males! Also,
a female's body is thin and slender. When the stomach comes to the
abdomen (rear end), it comes more to a point. A male's body is wider.
It's mainly fatter and doesn't come to a point. |
