Overview: A rate is a comparison of different quantities.

Speed is commonly used to refer to how fast a person can move, there are many formulas to work out speed.

Average speed: To calculate average speed you must do the following:Calculate the average speed of a car that travels 180km in 5 hours:Steps:

1. Write the formula for calculating the average speed. Average speed = distance : time taken

2. Substitute the values for distance a time. d= 180km, t= 5hours.Average speed = 180 : 53.
