Detergent breaks down the cell membrane, and enzymes break down the proteins protecting the DNA. Chemicals are used to separate the DNA from the cells. Bacteria were used to mass produce desired genes. CleanbacWhat is Cleanbac?Cleanbac is bioengineered bacteria that can clean up oil spills (Edl et al.) How it worksUsing recombinant DNA bacteria was made to metabolize, or consume, oil. The byproducts are water and carbon dioxide. Bacteria require nitrogen (ammonia) and phosphorous (phosphate) to break down oil. Bacteria and fertilizer containing ammonia and phosphate can be dumped onto oil spills to help clean up oil.
