Recombinant DNA

Recombinant DNA technology allows us here at Gattaga to bring you these cutting edge products by inserting useful foreign genes into bacteria. These bacteria can then produce useful enzymes and substances to carry out new jobs. Recombinant DNA technology can also be applied to other organisms. To understand how these products work, please visit our about recombinant DNA page.

Gensulin

What is Gensulin?

Gensulin is the human hormone insulin produced using recombinant DNA. Using recombinant DNA provides cheaper human insulin (unlike bovine or porcine insulin).

How it works

Gensulin is produced in large quantities by large tanks of bacteria in our laboratories. The bacteria contain recombinant DNA. Insulin is collected from the tanks, purified, and tested for quality. It is then ready for use.

DNABank

What is Dnabank?

DNA from many plants and animals, as well as some specific genes, are available for purchase for commercial and educational use. DNA extraction kits are also available. Please contact us for more information.

How it works

DNA can be extracted from cells by using detergent, chemicals, and some enzymes. Detergent breaks down the cell membrane, and enzymes break down the proteins protecting the DNA. Chemicals are used to separate the DNA from the cells. Teachers: for an interesting lesson on how to extract DNA from cells go here. Specific genes can be ordered as well. We have many genes available for research that were created using recombinant DNA. Bacteria were used to mass produce desired genes.

Cleanbac

What is Cleanbac?

Cleanbac is bioengineered bacteria that can clean up oil spills (Edl et al.)

How it works

Using recombinant DNA bacteria was made to metabolize, or consume, oil. The byproducts are water and carbon dioxide. Bacteria require nitrogen (ammonia) and phosphorous (phosphate) to break down oil. Bacteria and fertilizer containing ammonia and phosphate can be dumped onto oil spills to help clean up oil. It is not recommended that this method be used alone to clean up oil. Talk to one of our representatives for more information (Edl et al.).

BioCorn

What is BioCorn?

BioCorn is a white corn that has been genetically engineered using recombinant DNA to be the most advanced corn in the country.

How it works

BioCorn started out with normal corn DNA. Genes for rapid growth, drought resistance, and insect resistance were added. Not only does this corn grow fast, it can survive those long dry spells and it even produces its own insecticide which is safe for human consumption. Not only will this massively increase your production of crops, it also only costs 30% more than normal seed. Now that is a good investment.
