Welcome

Thank you for visiting our site. Please see below for a discussion on the purpose of our site, how our site is designed, recommendations on how to casually browse our site, advice on how to find specific information quickly, and information on how to use our site.

*NOTE*: If you do not have a solid background in biology, it is important that you visit the section "Basic Biology" before viewing the rest of the site in order to understand the contents. If you do not know a word, chances are it is in the glossary.

Purpose

The purpose of our site is to educate teenagers about biotechnology in an interesting and creative way. We hope that the presentation of this material will spark an interest in science, and in particular biotechnology, that will lead to further research by the student. We want to encourage a scientifically literate community where our citizens know enough about biotechnology to be able to understand and vote on important issues. In the next few years, the teenagers who have viewed our site will be able to vote. Also, in the next few years, there will be intense debate over biotechnology issues, and we hope an educated community will be able to play an active an role in these debates. Already the world is facing issues regarding biotechnology. One example is the use of genetically modified corn. Some starving third world countries are refusing to accept corn from other countries because the corn has been genetically modified. All of us in the global community will have to work together now, and in the future, to solve hard problems like these. Even if this site only educates five people, if these students are able to debate and educate others about biotechnology issues, this site will have been worthwhile. On this site, visitors will be able to view information about issues relating to biotechnology as well as the benefits and possibilities. We encourage visitors to view the "additional resources and links" under each section to view ideas for further research and learning.

Design

We designed our site to look like the website of a modern day biotechnology company named Gattaga. Gattaga sells products, and its website provides background information about biotechnology. While all of the products are fictional, they are plausible products that could be made now or in the near future. All of the cited information about the products is factual as well as the background information about biotechnology.

Casual Browsing

We hope that some of you came to this site because the idea of biotechnology interests you. Please select any of the topics under "products" on the navigation bar on the left side of your screen. Clicking on a topic will bring you to products that are possible using the technology you selected. Please note that the products are fictional, although they are possible ideas for products and could most likely be made. You will also find links within each product category to more information describing in detail the technology behind the products you are viewing. If you feel that you need a little more information about basic biology for you to understand the explanations of the products you are viewing, please go to the basic biology section. To find words that you may not know please click on the link. This will pop open a new window that you can leave up while you are surfing our site. If you are interested in a little more structured viewing, you can use the guided tour buttons that are on the bottom of each page. To begin, click next at the bottom of this page.
